Presumptive Coverage for Operational Stress Injuries

Today we are very pleased that the BC government through Minister of Labour Harry Bains and Minister of Mental Health Judy Darcy has announced presumptive coverage for operational stress injuries for BC first responders including firefighters, police, paramedics, corrections, and sheriffs. This announcement will assist in removing barriers, remove the burden of proof and make it easier to access mental health resources. We would like to commend the Ministries and all MLA’s for their continued support of first responders in our quest to ensure the safety and well-being of those in the front lines protecting our communities.
Also announced today is the inclusion of all federal firefighters in BC under the existing presumptive coverages for cancers and heart.
We would like to thank our partners in the first responder community - police and paramedics - for their support and coordinated efforts to see this legislation come forward.
Also to Minister Shane Simpson who initially sponsored a private members bill on this.
On behalf of all firefighters in British Columbia and the entire Executive Board of the BCPFFA we offer our very sincere gratitude and appreciation for this important legislation in making a difference in the lives of many.
